Church Opportunities / Ambassador Program
Shepherds College is a faith-based, non-profit school for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Church support in the form of prayer, volunteers, awareness-building, and financial gifts are vital to the health of our ministry and continued service to our students.
Is your church interested in learning more about God’s work in and through Shepherds College? Consider sending a small group of adult church members to our campus as part of our three-day Church Ambassador Program.
The Church Ambassador Program runs Tuesdays through Thursdays, starting in August and ending in May each academic year. Our goal is to use your group’s three-day visit to teach you about our one-of-a-kind program through training, classroom experience, and volunteer service. We trust your group will leave our campus with love and appreciation for our staff and students, and with the knowledge necessary to represent Shepherds College to your church congregation.
Learn
On the first day of the Ambassador visit, church members will participate in interactive training to teach them about the disabilities of our students, how to engage and feel comfortable around our students, and how to talk to their church congregation about Shepherds College upon their return. The day will include:
- continental breakfast
- a greeting from a member of the Shepherds College Lead Team
- presentations
- training
- lunch at Shepherds Table with the students
- a campus tour
- coffee and snacks
- a time for Q & A
Experience
On the second day, all of our Ambassadors will begin in the gym at 8:30a to meet the students and the paraprofessionals. The Ambassadors will spend the day with the students – going to classes, assisting the instructors, eating lunch at Shepherds Table, and helping in Advisory. The day will end at 5:00p. Optional evening activities with the students include Impact, our fitness program, and Wacky Wednesday events, including game nights and open gym.
Serve
The third day will be filled with service to our staff and students. As volunteers, our Ambassadors will have the opportunity to work in areas such as the commercial kitchen, the production kitchen, the greenhouse, maintenance and domestics, offices, or classrooms. Lunch at Shepherds Table is included. At 3:00p, all Ambassadors will meet to download about their experiences and feelings. This time includes coffee, snacks, follow-up plans, sharing ideas for how to support Shepherds College after the visit, and take-aways to convey to the Ambassadors’ church congregation.
There is a nominal fee of $50 per Ambassador to cover the cost of food and housing.
