Employment / Co-lead Instructor—Horticulture
SUMMARY
The Horticulture Co-Lead Instructors are the primary instructors in the Horticulture occupational program. They are responsible for the development of the Horticulture program, its curriculum and assessment, and the occupational experience placements and schedule. They also oversee, manage, and maintain the SC Greenhouse, Hoop House, and gardens, which includes the year-round working Greenhouse learning activities in order to prepare for a Spring Greenhouse sale that is a part of the occupational program. The person in this position should have an in-depth knowledge of the use, maintenance, and repair of hand-held, small, and large horticulture tools and equipment; landscaping and plant identification and management; overseeing and maintaining aquaponics and hydroponics systems, and; produce gardening.
SHIFT
1st shift hours Monday – Friday, occasionally needed for weekend events such as greenhouse sales
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(include the following. Other duties may be assigned):
- Serve as a conduit of Christ’s love for others in an effort to point others to Jesus through our actions and words.
- Serve as a Co-Lead instructor for Horticulture, utilizing effective training methods
- Co-teaches lesson components
- Supports students with learning activities and organizational skills
- Works closely with other faculty and staff members, and the Horticulture Advisory Team to ensure program success
- Further develop the Shepherds College Horticulture vocational training program, including updating and revising curriculum, and developing campus practice sites and occupational experience placement.
- Provide safe instruction, practice, and experience for students operating horticultural equipment.
- Collaborate with local and distant Community interests to enhance the development of Horticulture training.
- Oversees greenhouse sales and grounds projects
- Maintains good liaison with local occupational experience sites
- Assess students’ knowledge, understanding, and skill acquisition regularly
- Establish, oversee placement, and evaluate the occupational experience for Horticulture students
- Lead the institutional accreditation process for the Horticulture Program.
- Further develop the Horticulture Advisory Team, ensuring that its work meets accreditation standards and its feedback is considered in the program
- Manage an authorized, annual budget for the Horticulture program.
- Provide floral arrangements or other potted décor for Shepherds College events, as requested, such as Preview Day.
- Annually review the overall program and its effectiveness, making necessary changes to enhance overall effectiveness
- Attend Shepherds College faculty meetings and serve on any Shepherds College faculty teams, as assigned

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in related field is preferred; Associate’s degree in related field is required
- Extensive experience in the industry of Horticulture including a vast knowledge of Horticulture plant materials
- A minimum of 2 years experience as an instructor, preferably in a classroom setting
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual and development disabilities
- Commitment to student learning and development
- Effective communicator, including verbal and written communication
- Strong organizational skills
- Possess a high level of professionalism, including the ability to maintain confidentiality
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid driver's license.

Employee must complete a TB skin test and a physical exam which certifies freedom from communicable disease within 90 days prior to beginning employment. Medical documentation of TB skin test results and physical exam must be submitted to the Human Resources Department prior to beginning employment.
